The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Proverbs 7:1-3,
"My son, keep my words
and store up my commands within you.
Keep my commands and you will live;
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart."
These verses speak to me of memorizing Scripture, "write them on the tablet of your heart". I have found that the best way to meditate on the Scriptures is both through the memorization process and the time it takes to review those passages already committed to memory over time.
It takes effort and I find that many of us have an aversion to investing the time or effort required. With 168 hours of time per week, we all decide what it is we will do with the time the Lord has given us. Many of us have a lot of things on our plate from day to day and it can be difficult to find time to do all we want or need to do. However, this is an activity that far surpasses many other things in our lives we feel are important.
A number of years ago I committed to memorizing the book of Romans with a couple of other friends. Since that time, I have finished that book (and review it regularly) and am now more than half way through Hebrews. I mention it, because, if an old duffer like me can continue to memorize Scripture, and review it to keep it fresh in my mind, most anyone can.
It takes me only about 15 to 20 minutes a day, Monday through Friday, at the most, to review what I have already committed to memory, as well as work on new verses.
We really can do quite a bit without taking a lot of time. Since it is the Lord who has given me life and gives me time here on planet earth, when he asks me to commit his word to memory, I feel an obligation to do so. I have found the rewards tremendous. Having committed large portions of Scripture to memory, I now see many things there I hadn't before. It helps me avoid bad theology, and certainly, helps me know God so much better. I can't think of a more productive thing to do in life than to become acquainted with God's word. Memorizing it is a great way to get to know it.
It is simply a matter of deciding to do so. I can do it! You can do it! We all can do it!
