The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 22:12-18,
“Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”
Here is a prophetic picture of the crucifixion scene provided for us through David a millennium before the event. It is an account of the event through the Lord’s eyes himself as he hung on the cross. Here the Lord speaks of the terror of the event which seems to include the horrific from the spiritual dimension, “Roaring Lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me.” He speaks of the evil men that surrounded him in his torment, “Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me… people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them…”
He also speaks of his physical torment, “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint… My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth… they have pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones…” He also speaks of the torment of his soul, “My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me.”
The satisfaction of God’s justice to provide me a place at his table required nothing less than this horrific death of the Son of God! The terror, the torment, the horrific death of God’s one and only Son manifests a love for me that I can scarce understand! What kind of love displays such sacrifice?! What mercy! What kindness!
