Worship for Today: The Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on them!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 135:1-2,

"Praise the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord; praise him, you servants of the Lord, you who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God."

The opening two verses of this psalm contain four references to "the Lord" and one to "our God". In them we are told three times to praise him, those "who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God." Where the psalmist must have had in mind the Levites as they carried out their daily duties of the temple worship and other activities, my perspective is that it is those of us who comprise the temple of the Lord today, his church, that fulfill that sentiment today.

In Psalm 135 the psalmist provides every reason the Lord deserves this praise, based on the wonderful things the Lord had done for his people, Israel. The Lord had chosen Jacob "to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession", verse 4. The Lord is great and does whatever pleases him, verses 5 and 6. He is the God of creation, responsible for the weather, verse7. The Lord judged Egypt on Israel's behalf and struck down other nations and kings that opposed Israel, verses 8 through 12. Other causes for praising the Lord are provided as well.

What catches my eye this morning the psalmist gives as cause for praise is that the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, verse 14. As the Son of God came to die a horrible death on a cross to secure the payment for our sins, to take our punishment on himself, he demonstrated a compassion that is so far reaching it is difficult to comprehend! Certainly, based on this cause alone is more than ample motivation to praise our Lord!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your thoughts of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We'd love to hear from you!
