The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 59:17,
“O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.”
In this psalm David sings of God as being his strength and his fortress. Why does David have such an appreciation of God as his strength and fortress? David lived in a world that was hostile to him. In the title of the psalm we are told this psalm is in reference to a time when King Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. David speaks of his enemies, “bloodthirsty men”, verse 2. They are evildoers conspiring and laying in wait for him, verse 3. He calls them “wicked traitors” snarling like dogs and prowling about the city.
We, likewise have our enemies. The devil is called our enemy in Peter 5:8, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” The world with its collective sin nature is an enemy and seeks to satisfy its own at the expense of others. We, likewise, find within ourselves a sin nature that we battle with, that is our enemy.
We may not have a king that has sent spies to kill us as David did. But just as David looked to God for deliverance and protection, we have our enemies that we need refuge from. Just as God was David’s strength and fortress, so God is ours as well! And, just as David says he will sing of God’s strength in the morning following his deliverance, verse 16, so likewise we will sing of the deliverance our God provides us as we enjoy sweet fellowship with him in the resurrection!
