The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 8:3-4,
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”
Here is a great question that is asked by David. As he looks around him, at God’s creation, he senses astonishment that the Creator God is even mindful of man! In Romans 1:20 we read, “Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” From this vantage point David can see the handprints of God’s creative acts all over nature pointing to his “eternal power and divine nature”. The thought of it drives him to a very understandable quandary: how to make sense of One who is so transcendent and powerful to be able to create all there is and that this same One to be mindful of man, to even care for man? Little man catching the attention of the Creator of the cosmos! That is an astonishing thought!
And yet David knows of the love of God! God is not just mindful of man but has such love for him that he sent his own Son to die a miserable death to save us from his own judgment, to pay our penalty for our sin! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” Truly astonishing! What a heart of love and kindness our Creator God has for us!
