Worship for Today: The Lord has created us to experience delight!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 36:7-8,

How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.

From time to time I wonder why we have five senses. God in his wisdom gave us five senses to relate to our environment. It is had to imagine what I would give up if one day God said we needed to reduce it to four, any four, you pick the sense. I love music and would hate to loose the ability to enjoy it. The sound of the rain on a tin roof or concrete surface delights me to no end. Morning birds add such beauty to the start of any new day. The sense of smell adds so much to the day as well. In addition to providing me a warning when I encounter something unhealthy, like bad milk, road-kill, etc. the sense of smell brings delight: coffee and bacon in the morning, a new-mown lawn, the fragrance of an April shower, you get the point. Vision, touch and taste are all such wonderful interfaces to the world around me it is just very difficult to imagine having to give up any of them.

A large part of the wonder of these senses is that they have such a depth to them. Most of us dont see in just black and white, but with all of the beauty of the full color spectrum, and so all the senses have such depth. The difficulty for me in envisioning giving up any one of them is that they all bring such delight! This is one of the wonders of Gods creativity that fascinates me: he has designed us for delight. Our senses, among other, very practical uses, provide for us that which brings to our hearts delight. Other things bring delight to us as well. When we have children and watch them grow, when we fall in love, when we pursue hobbies and activities that enchant us we experience delight.

Hands down, the greatest delight is in knowing the Lord. Here in this passage David observes that the Lord gives those who find their refuge in him drink from your river of delights. As the Lord is our Creator God and has designed us with the ability to experience delight, he not only knows how to, but has chosen to delight us! Elsewhere, in Psalm 16:11, David, in speaking of the resurrection, acknowledges that the Lord will fill him with joy in his presence, with eternal pleasures at his right hand.

How wonderful our Creator God has chosen to design us in such a way we experience delight! How wonderful our Creator God has chosen to delight us by sharing himself with us!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
