Worship for Today: Lord's wrath is as great as the fear that is due him!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 90:11,

Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.

This psalm is a prayer of Moses. In it he asks the Lord to relent in his anger and indignation. To me this psalm is a wonderful expression of the fear of the Lord in a godly mans heart. We read so much of Moses and his dealings with the Lord in the Pentateuch and here we have something of a window into Moses heart in his expression to the Lord.

In this psalm Moses acknowledges that the Lord is from all eternity and that he transcends time, verses 2-3. He speaks of the judgment of the Lord for our sins, verses 5-11, saying, We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. In this psalm Moses asks the Lord to teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Verse 12. Then he asks the Lord to relent and have compassion and extend his favor.

Moses knew of the love of the Lord, his kindness and compassion. He also knew of the anger, wrath and judgment of the Lord. Our God expresses both and so much more. We see both as the Lord revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus 34:6b-7, The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.

Surely, the Lords wrath is as great as the fear that is due him!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
