The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 26:12-14,
“Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.”
Isaac, the inheritor of God’s blessing to Abraham, became a famine refugee in Gerar. While there as a refugee the Lord appeared to Isaac and told him he would bless him, give him and his descendants land, make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and bless all the nations of the earth through his offspring.
True to his word, the Lord blessed Isaac by making him very wealthy and successful, so much so that his neighbors grew envious of him. And likewise, all the nations of the earth have been blessed through Isaac’s offspring in the coming of Jesus Christ.
The Lord has made promises to us as well. “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13b-14. We have an inheritance! But like Isaac who experienced difficulties prior to the fulfillment of the promises the Lord made to him, we also experience difficulties in this life. Peter tells us, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.” 1 Peter 1:3-6.
Like Isaac, we have an inheritance! Like Isaac we face struggles. But also like Isaac, the Lord will surely fulfill all his promises to us as we will one day enter into the inheritance our wonderful Lord has promised us! As Peter says, this inheritance can never perish, spoil or fade. It is kept in heaven for us and will be revealed to us in the resurrection! What a day that will be!!
