The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 28:20-21,
“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God…’”
Here is the vow that Jacob makes after he has his vision of God and the stairway to heaven. He goes on to vow further that a pillar he sets up will be God’s house and that he will give back a tenth to all God gives him.
I have quoted the first part of his vow because it is so apropos for all of us who have found ourselves in this lost and fallen world and have embraced Jesus Christ in faith. We are on a journey here in this life and look to our eventual arrival in the resurrection where we will be forever with the Lord in a new order of things. While here we look to the Lord to watch over us, provide for us and get us safely home, to heaven.
I am reminded of the doxology we quote each Sunday, “To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy…” Jude 24. Just as the Lord blessed Jacob with success on his journey, so the Lord will bless us with success on our journey here on planet earth! He will provide for us while here and bring us safely home to himself, back to our “father’s house”!
