The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 29:31a,
“When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he opened her womb…”
Granted that we are talking of the formation of tribes of Israel, God’s own chosen people through whom he will bless the world with the coming Messiah, I find something fascinating about the heart of God revealed to us by Moses here. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved he blessed her by enabling her pregnancy. For a wife to be barren was a reproach and a dishonor in this culture. And, although we know that the Lord is going to build for himself a people through the descendants of Jacob, it is the heart of God that chooses to bless Leah in the midst of her heartbreak in not being loved by her husband.
I always think of God in the big terms: he is omnipotent, he knows all things, he is everywhere and his sovereignty rules over all. It is somewhat astonishing to me that the Creator and Sustainer of the cosmos meets us at the cares and concerns of our hearts as he did Leah. This thought is captured in Peter’s comment, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7. I would think that God might have better things to do than to concern himself with my worries, disappointments, hopes and fears but these are the very things he has decided are the “better things” to concern himself with. I find this just amazing… how about you? What a wonderful God we have!!
