The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 30:14,22-23,
“During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, ‘Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.’… Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, ‘God has taken away my disgrace.’”
Mandrakes, in Rachel’s day, were thought to promote pregnancy. Here in verse 14 we see Rachel resorting to these mandrakes to do for her what only God can. When she finally does become pregnant with Joseph, Moses tells us it is due to God “remembering” her, verse 22. Rachel, likewise, acknowledges it is God who enabled her pregnancy.
As her husband’s grandfather, Abraham, found, it is God who provides. In Genesis 22:14 Abraham calls a place, “Yahweh-Yireh”, God Provides, when the Lord provided a ram to sacrifice in the place of his son, Isaac. As Paul preached to the folks in Lystra, “He [God] has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:17.
This morning I am reminded that it is God who provides all we need for life and godliness, 2 Peter 1:3. A lot of folks look to a lot of things but James tells us to draw near to God and he will draw near to us. How wonderful is our God who provides us all we need!
