Worship for Today: Deliverance is found in the Lord!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 32:9-12,

Then Jacob prayed, O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O Lord, who said to me, Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper, I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

I love this prayer of Jacob. He prays this on his return home as his brother Esau, from whom he deceitfully took the patriarchal blessing (by tricking their father, Isaac), is fast approaching with four hundred men. Jacob is a desperate man here, but he was told by the Lord to return home and was assured by the Lord that he would be with him.

In this wonderful prayer Jacob addresses the God of his fathers and reminds him that it was God himself who had asked him to return home and that he would bless him. Jacob humbly acknowledges his unworthiness of all that the Lord had blessed him with up till this time. I dont read this as window-dressing for an elegant prayer. Jacob is genuine here. As we have been reading the accounts of Jacob and the other patriarchs we have found good grounds for this heartfelt humility and contrition. Jacob acknowledges he came with nothing and so everything he has (which is very substantial at this time in his life) is not due to his hard work or craftiness but what the Lord has blessed him with.

Jacob asks deliverance from the peril he is facing based on the Lords own promise to him. I cant help but think this a very appropriate prayer for me. I find myself in this life, having arrived with nothing, blessed with family, home and many wonderful things, facing certain death, as we all do. Whatever it is I do have I must acknowledge it as blessings from God. He has called me heavenward, to an eternal destination as a home with him and all others who heed his call. As the Lord made his promises to Jacob so he does to me. Just look at this wonderful promise made to us in Romans 10:9:

If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

And look at what he blesses us with in Ephesians 1:3-14:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

Just as Jacob acknowledged it was the Lord who was responsible for all he had in life, so must I. Just as Jacobs hope of deliverance from deadly peril was to be sought from the Lord, so must I. It is the Lord himself who beckons me, who has called me homeward to him.

Worship for Today: God is in this place and sends his angels to do his bidding!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 32:1-2,

Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, This is the camp of God! So he named that place Mahanaim.

The name Mahanaim means two camps. As Joseph leaves Laban following their confrontation over Jacobs deceitful flight from Laban and the oath they took not to harm one another, Jacob encounters this camp of angels. We are not told how many angels there were, just that there was an encampment of them. What were they doing there? Was their primary mission to meet Jacob as he was facing an encounter with his brother Esau, whose ire he also raised through deceit? Or were they about some other business and took the opportunity to meet with Jacob? The details are pretty sketchy.

My assumption is that if it were important for us to know further details of this encampment of angels more detail would be provided. But, as in other passages, it raises my interest and curiosity. Were the angels of Mahanaim there on business or pleasure? Was Jacob their primary assignment if business was what brought them there? Did they break camp after their encounter with Jacob or did they remain for other purposes? These seem like silly questions but the answers might help me with something I know little about: encountering angels. I sometimes wonder if maybe I might have had an encounter with an angel. In Hebrews 13:2 we read, Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. From this I suspect some of us very well may have had angelic encounters. From the verse in Hebrews it makes it sound as though they make look like any of us and go undetected.

Whatever the answers are to these questions there are a few things I do know. God is very engaged and active on earth. He sends his angels to do his bidding and they have been encountered from time to time. Any of us might possibly have had encounters with them. It leaves me astonished at a whole reality that I am quite certain surrounds us and in which we live our lives largely unaware of.

God is in this place and sends his angels to do his bidding.

Worship for Today: God cares for us!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 29:31a,

When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he opened her womb

Granted that we are talking of the formation of tribes of Israel, Gods own chosen people through whom he will bless the world with the coming Messiah, I find something fascinating about the heart of God revealed to us by Moses here. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved he blessed her by enabling her pregnancy. For a wife to be barren was a reproach and a dishonor in this culture. And, although we know that the Lord is going to build for himself a people through the descendants of Jacob, it is the heart of God that chooses to bless Leah in the midst of her heartbreak in not being loved by her husband.

I always think of God in the big terms: he is omnipotent, he knows all things, he is everywhere and his sovereignty rules over all. It is somewhat astonishing to me that the Creator and Sustainer of the cosmos meets us at the cares and concerns of our hearts as he did Leah. This thought is captured in Peters comment, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7. I would think that God might have better things to do than to concern himself with my worries, disappointments, hopes and fears but these are the very things he has decided are the better things to concern himself with. I find this just amazing how about you? What a wonderful God we have!!

Worship for Today: God will provide for us and bring us safely home!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 28:20-21,

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God…’”

Here is the vow that Jacob makes after he has his vision of God and the stairway to heaven. He goes on to vow further that a pillar he sets up will be Gods house and that he will give back a tenth to all God gives him.

I have quoted the first part of his vow because it is so apropos for all of us who have found ourselves in this lost and fallen world and have embraced Jesus Christ in faith. We are on a journey here in this life and look to our eventual arrival in the resurrection where we will be forever with the Lord in a new order of things. While here we look to the Lord to watch over us, provide for us and get us safely home, to heaven.

I am reminded of the doxology we quote each Sunday, To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy…” Jude 24. Just as the Lord blessed Jacob with success on his journey, so the Lord will bless us with success on our journey here on planet earth! He will provide for us while here and bring us safely home to himself, back to our fathers house!

Worship for Today: Our God is present, right here with us!!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 28:16,

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’”

Jacob here is in route to find himself a wife in Haran. He stops for the night at Bethel and has his dream/vision of a stairway to heaven with angels traveling to and fro and God speaking to him. Jacobs reaction is that he had no idea the place he stopped at was where God was. He says, This is none other than the house of God…”

As I read my Bible I discover that God is omnipresent. There is no place or time where God is not present. Here is a truth that seems to escape me at those moments when it would be best to be reminded of this reality. I am even reminded that God dwells within me as a believer in Jesus Christ through his Holy Spirit.

This means there is nothing I will encounter on my own. God is right here with me, knowing what I will face even before I do. The good things and the bad things: all things I encounter I will do so with him. He knows what I have need of and he knows the things I struggle with. When I feel down, he is right here with me. When I feel up he is right here with me. As I face the future with its uncertainties I know I will face them with him right here with me. I will never be alone but will always have the company of the Creator of all things who works for my good in all things, Romans 8:28-29.

How often I have had to say, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it. How I need to remind myself of this truth and allow it to influence the things I think, do, say and feel. I am never alone, the Lord is in this place!!

Worship for Today: God is worthy of my whole heart!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 31:19,

When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father's household gods.

This takes place when Jacob is told by God to return home after serving Laban for twenty years. Why Rachel stole her fathers idols is a mystery. Some have suggested that after seeing how God had blessed Jacob she wanted to remove Labans idols so he could no longer worship them. This seems unlikely to me in that if Rachel had learned anything about God from Jacob it would have been that God desires our faith, our hearts. Simply removing some statuettes that have been falsely ascribed the role of deity would be a futile attempt on Rachels part. In any event it would have been much easier for Rachel to dispose of them prior to leaving and thereby not endangering herself through getting caught with them.

It may have been that Rachel felt that with these idols, Laban might have been able to divine the route Jacob and company would be taking back to his home. It may have been also that Rachel wanted to take something from her homeland and something from her youth to have with her as she fled with Jacob to what would be for her, uncharted territory. And, of course it may have been that Rachel felt these idols might have provided her with safety for the journey and a prosperous future.

Rachel, along with Leah, acknowledges it is God who has prospered Jacob and his family, Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. 31:16. To me, Rachel seems to be an inconsistent mix of things. She acknowledges God on the one hand but her actions appear to communicate less than a complete embrace of God.

The irony of these worthless idols having to be protected by Rachel in sitting on them, while allegedly being on her period, is rich. The one thought that comes to my mind this morning comes from Exodus 20:3, You shall have no other gods before me. And, Jesus quote of Deuteronomy 6:5 in Matthew 22:37, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Our God not only demands nothing less - he is certainly due nothing less from me. He is worthy of all of my love from all of my heart. He has given me life! He has provided me with a way to him through his Son, Jesus Christ! He has assured me participation in the resurrection! He has demonstrated to me love, mercy, kindness and forgiveness that demand an uncompromised love and fidelity from me!

Worship for Today: Our God Provides!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 30:14,22-23,

During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.’… Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, God has taken away my disgrace.’”

Mandrakes, in Rachels day, were thought to promote pregnancy. Here in verse 14 we see Rachel resorting to these mandrakes to do for her what only God can. When she finally does become pregnant with Joseph, Moses tells us it is due to God remembering her, verse 22. Rachel, likewise, acknowledges it is God who enabled her pregnancy.

As her husbands grandfather, Abraham, found, it is God who provides. In Genesis 22:14 Abraham calls a place, Yahweh-Yireh, God Provides, when the Lord provided a ram to sacrifice in the place of his son, Isaac. As Paul preached to the folks in Lystra, He [God] has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy. Acts 14:17.

This morning I am reminded that it is God who provides all we need for life and godliness, 2 Peter 1:3. A lot of folks look to a lot of things but James tells us to draw near to God and he will draw near to us. How wonderful is our God who provides us all we need!

Worship for Today: Our God uses us in spite of our shortcomings!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 30:1,7-8,

When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, Give me children, or I'll die! Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won. So she named him Naphtali.

In the account of the birth of Jacobs children we find so much that is less than honorable. Leah, whom we are told was not attractive, continues to attempt to earn Jacobs love and acceptance. She says things like, Surely my husband will love me now. 29:32. Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too. 29:33. Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have born him three sons. 29:34. And, This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons. 30:20. Perhaps this is the outcome of what happened when her father deceived Jacob by passing Leah off as Rachel on the wedding night. Leah got to marry the heir of Abrahams blessing through deceit and trickery only to spend the remainder of her life attempting to find love and acceptance from him. It is quite a sad account from her perspective.

As I read it from Rachels perspective, we find that no matter how physically attractive she might have been, she seemed to be driven by some ugly motives. She is filled with jealousy, 30:1, and engages in attempts to outdo her sister. She says, I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won. 30:8. She even sold her bed with Jacob, so to speak, to Leah (her chosen adversary) in exchange for some mandrakes (thought to help cause pregnancy) that Leahs son Reuben had gathered. To pass off Rachels actions and attitudes as the inevitable consequences of polygamy is to overlook a careful reading of the text in my opinion.

The whole account seems rife with, as I say, what is less than honorable. Sinful attitudes and actions motivated by the sinful nature dominate the tale. And yet, this is the account of the beginning of the twelve tribes of Gods own chosen people. It will be this people that he will entrust his very words to. To them Paul observes in Romans 9:4-5, Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

What are we to make of this? My thought this morning is what the Scripture reveals to us about God is that he uses us in spite of our sinful condition, our faults and our weaknesses. God has his own agenda and fulfills all he desires to accomplish - and can even use people like me to do it! If there ever was an opportunity for me to be used by God for some purpose, it would certainly be in spite of me not because of me. How astonishing our Creator can use any of us! But use us he does and that in spite of our shortcomings.
