The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Isaiah 27:1,

"In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword, his fierce, great and powerful sword, Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea."
As God pronounces the retribution of his justice on those who oppose him, there is nothing - no one - who can stand before him. Nothing that we might consider as powerful or anything to be feared (as represented by "Leviathan") can stand before the Lord Almighty.
He knows this and he wants us to know it as well. Rebellion and sin will have to be accounted for and nothing can or will stand in the way of God's judgment for that rebellion and sin. As the writer of Hebrews put it, "For we know him who said, 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' and again, 'The Lord will judge his people.' It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Hebrews 10:30-31.
As I think of the terrible judgment of the Lord and the coming great "Day of the Lord" when God will deal with this fallen world for sin and rebellion and the holocaust it will bring as Peter talked about, "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare", 2 Peter 3:10, I find it frightful.
But at the same time it causes me to think of the wonderful and boundless love displayed by our Lord Jesus Christ as he gave his life on the cross as payment for our sin – our hiding place, our shelter from the storm.
Surely God's wrath is coming… like a huge massive freight train that cannot be stopped, it has left the station and is headed for planet Earth with nothing to stop it. As terrifying as that is, how equally do the wonderful qualities displayed by God appear as we experience his boundless love, his patient forbearance and forgiveness, mercy and grace that are revealed in the cross of Jesus Christ!
What a Savior!
