The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 16:5-6,9-11,
“Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance… Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
In this wonderful psalm of David, he reflects on the inheritance he has in the Lord. It is delightful and he describes its boundaries has having fallen “in pleasant places”. David will be able to rest secure in death as he knows that God will not abandon him to the grave but that he will exult in joy in the presence of the Lord with “eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Wow! Breathtaking to think of!
We likewise share in this same inheritance that David receives! In Ephesians 1:13-14 , Paul tells us, “You also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” The hope we have in the resurrection is an astonishing and exciting new life we will have, with “eternal pleasures” at the Lord’s right hand; a new life without end, a life without the pain, suffering and hardship that marks this life.
As David considered life in the resurrection he says, “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices”! Likewise for us, as we consider our inheritance in the resurrection our hearts are gladdened as we rejoice as well!
