Worship for Today: To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord...

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 27:4,

One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

David says much about the Lord in this psalm. He extols the Lord as the One who is his light and salvation. The Lord is the stronghold of his life and so he has nothing to fear from anyone. David says the Lord will keep him safe in the day of trouble and exalt him above his enemies.

While David certainly had a clear view of the Lord and was not bashful about expressing his wonder, amazement, astonishment and adoration for the Lord, he was likewise not bashful about asking of the Lord something that burned within his heart: he wanted to dwell in the house of the Lord that he might be able to gaze upon his beauty!

What is it about the Lord that this is Davids one burning request? As I think of his request I wonder just what it was about the Lord that Moses caught a glimpse of that transformed him so dramatically when the Lord passed in front of him. Scripture calls it the Lords glory. Just what is the nature of the Lords glory? What does it look like? What is this penetrating brilliance? One of the astonishing things the Lord told Moses was that no one could view him and survive! But if we could if we could view just a sliver of it and survive what would we see? How would it impact us? I have to assume that to gaze on the Lord or view him would bring about some kind of impact it certainly did with Moses. How would it impact us physically? How would it impact us emotionally and spiritually? Im quite certain it would take our breath away and be an event in our lives that would change us forever! As I listen to Paul talk about being caught up to paradise, hearing inexpressible things that man is not permitted to tell and Johns vision of the throne in heaven and the One seated on it and other experiences recounted in the pages of Scripture where someone caught a glimpse of the Lord, his throne, his glory, it is just fascinating!!

And, of course, the exciting prospect we all look forward to is that all of us who have embraced Jesus Christ in faith will share in the fantastic enjoyment of gazing on the beauty of the Lord for an eternity talk about something to get excited about!!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
