Worship for Today

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Mark 10:17, 21-22,

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’” Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Here is a young man, rich and motivated. He runs up to Jesus and falls on his knees before him. He wants to know what he needs to do to inherit eternal life. From the account given, the young man apparently could not bring himself to part with his riches and help the poor. He walks away from Jesus in sadness.

We learn from the gospels that during his earthly ministry Jesus knew what was in a persons heart, even what they thought before they ever spoke. He knew all about people and their backgrounds. Read the account of the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4. Yet here is a young rich man who is full of himself, claiming to have kept all the law and unable to part with his riches in order to follow Jesus but we are told, Jesus looked at him and loved him.

A loud message we encounter over and over in the pages of Scripture is that the Lord loves us - just as we are. With all of our faults, shortcomings, with all the things we have done that we are not proud of, the Lord loves us! No matter who we are or what we have done he loves us! As astonishing as this may seem he loves us without our efforts to clean up our lives or straighten things out. He knows all of the things we have thought, felt, said or done and he still loves us! He loves us so much he died on that cross for us while we were preoccupied in our sin. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8.

The love of God is an astonishing thing!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
