The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Mark 2:16-17,
“When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the ‘sinners’ and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and “sinners”?’ On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’”
As it turns out we are all sinners and in need of Jesus Christ. As we read in Romans 3:23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are all in desperate need. Our disease is fatal as we are all members of a fallen race given over to our own sin nature. So, we are all “called”, we are all invited through the gospel message to righteousness, spiritual health and vitality, available to us in Jesus Christ.
As I think of it this morning I am struck by what this tells us about the heart of God. Through the gospel he seeks those who are needy. Some would pick only the best, only the brightest, only those who can bring the best advantage for their “team”. But not our God. He invites folks like me to his family. Folks who struggle, folks who are in need, folks who couldn’t make it into eternity without him. Our God is a God who cares for the helpless. With a heart of love he reaches out to the lowliest of us to provide what we need. And provide he did! Our Heavenly Father gave us his Son, the one to whom he said, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” He gave him to die a horrible death to pay the penalty for our sin! To the extent he loves his Son is the extent of the love he demonstrated to us helpless ones on that Good Friday two millennia ago!
