The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Mark 6:6b-13,
“Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. These were his instructions: ‘Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.’ They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.”
In this passage we learn that Jesus sent out the Twelve to preach that people should repent. They were also to drive out demons and heal people as they went authenticating the message they were taking.
In this familiar passage, I note the disciples were not to take along with them those items that would normally accompany someone on a trip. No food, no money, no extra clothes, not even luggage! I have often wondered why this detail…
Certainly one outcome of taking nothing for the journey would result in the Twelve having to recognize their total dependence on God as they were performing the supernatural. Utter dependence on God forced them to recognize just where the necessary means for the success of their trip was coming from.
What I draw from this is I need to recognize in my own life that I am utterly dependent on God. I might not be sent to cast out demons and heal people and participate as part of an elite group of twelve sent directly from the Lord himself, but whatever it is I find myself doing, I need to recognize my dependence on the Lord himself. And the good new is that our Lord does provide for each of us! He is our great provider! He is the one who makes things happen! He is the one who insures we have all we need! I am reminded of 2 Peter 1:3, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”
How wonderful it is to know our Lord is such a wonderful provider!
