The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in 2 Corinthians 8:9,
"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich."
As I think about this verse I find the matchless grace of Jesus Christ to be an amazing thing: our rich Lord taking on poverty to make us rich! And no – we are not talking dollars, Cadillacs and big screen TVs here as some mistakenly think. Peanuts! We are talking about things much greater and much loftier than what the carnal heart yearns for!
The exalted position of Jesus Christ over all creation, rule and authority, whether in heaven or on earth, his seating at the right hand of our Heavenly Father, his righteousness, his majesty and splendor are all things that we either have or are connected with as co-heirs of Jesus.
In Romans 8:14-17 we read, "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."
Abundant, eternal life as co-heirs with Christ is an enrichment to each one of us beyond anything imaginable! Jesus Christ became poor in coming to this lost and fallen world, to make us rich beyond anyone's wildest dreams!
What a wonder! What grace! What a Lord!
