The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Psalm 82:8,

"Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
for all the nations are your inheritance."
In this psalm Asaph provides us a glimpse into God's court, where he "presides in the great assembly", verse 1. In his court an indictment is brought against some called "gods" (little "g" gods), "How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?" In verse 5 the observation is made of these gods, "They know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness..."
Following the indictment, Asalph ends his psalm with a call for God to judge the earth - not just a particular group, but the whole earth. As he does so, he provides grounds for the appropriateness and legitimacy of God doing so: "all the nations are your inheritance."
All the nations belong to God. All the peoples belong to God. Not some god that a singular culture has invented but the one, and only one God, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. The Creator of the heavens and the earth. He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit.
You might live in Saudi Arabia with a fabricated religion, but… the only god is the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob and he is your God. You might be an Apache or Cherokee with a fabricated religion but... the only god is the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob and he is your God. You might be a progressive, a homosexual, a communist, an atheist or a feminist, with a fabricated religion (if any at all), but... the only god is the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob and he is your God. There is only one God for all of humanity and we all belong to him.
I am reminded of Deuteronomy 32:39-41, "See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. I lift my hand to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever, when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me."
The wise of all the earth - of all peoples - recognize who their god is: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. How thankful I am today for him providing his Son for us that I don't have to face that judgment!
