Worship for Today: Our God inspires a passion for him.

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Psalm 42:1-2,

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This psalm, by the Sons of Korah, is fascinating to me. In the midst of having a downcast soul, so disturbed within me the psalmist reflects on his thirst for God. In the midst of distress he looks to God, as the deer pants for streams of water. What is the cause for this great thirst? Is it possibly a look for relief from despair? Though this may be a part of it, I see something else afoot here. Maybe it is the very longing to return to God and the separation that results in this longing that has caused the despair and the thirst.

The psalmist reflects on the love the Lord directs. He reflects on his past experiences with God, how he used to lead the procession to the house of God. Remembrances of shouts of joy and thanksgiving in a festive throng. Mountain top type experiences with God. The voices we have in the pages of Scripture that speak of their experiences with God often report back to us this kind of excitement and desire to return. There is something irresistible about the Lord that they are drawn back to him. I am certain any close encounter with God generates this kind of desire.

Such is our God. He fulfills all the longings of empty hearts. He brings excitement and passion to life. There is a thrill associated with encounters with the Lord that cause a deep desire to return.

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
