Worship for Today: Our God is faithful and true to all he says!

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 25:7-11,

Altogether, Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

As I read of the blessing and the promises of the Lord passing from Abraham at his death to Isaac I am reminded of the faithfulness of God. God promised Abraham that he would have descendants and that he would bless Abraham and his descendants. The Lord also told Abraham it would be through Isaac that his descendants would be reckoned.

True to his word, following Abrahams death the blessing comes to Isaac. Our God is like that: faithful and always true to his word. The writer of Hebrews talks of this in Hebrews 6:13-20,

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, I will surely bless you and give you many descendants. And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

These two unchangeable things, the promise and the oath the Lord made to Abraham speaks to me of Gods very character and nature. He is faithful and he is always there. His word is true. He promised it and then delivered on it.

This reminds me of personal advice I give when I perform a wedding ceremony. To the couple I say, We all have a need for someone in our life that will never fail us. Someone who is consistently perfect on every occasion. This is because we were created by God to have a relationship with him. Do not look to your spouse to fill in your life what only God can provide. At times you will disappoint one another. You are human. Forgive one another and look to God for what only he can provide.

How wonderful that our God is faithful, true and that we can always count on him to be what he says he is and do what he says he will do, on every occasion!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
