The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 17:15-16,
“As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
As the Lord gives Abraham the covenant of circumcision he also tells Abraham to now call his wife Sarah. He goes on to say that he will bless Sarah by giving her a son, Isaac, and that he will further bless her by making her a mother of many nations and that kings of peoples will come from her.
We live in a day where the byword is, “He who dies with most toys wins!” Our culture views life in terms of what takes place between our birth and death. Period. Not so the Bible. It tells us that we have eternal souls and that life continues on after the grave. Death is just a doorway we must all pass through as we move on to our “eternal reward”. Those who have embraced Jesus Christ in faith will participate in the resurrection of life and those who do not will be cast into the Lake of Fire. What takes place in this life will have impact in the next.
This morning it is from this perspective I see the great blessing Sarah received from the Lord. While I recognize the immediate blessing Sarah received in a patriarchal society to be promised nations of offspring, it brings to my mind other thoughts. I suspect a part of what Sarah will enjoy as rich blessings from what she was promised by the Lord she will share in the resurrection together with her progeny.
Just a thought…
