The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 9:8-11,
“Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: ‘I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.’”
Here in this covenant that God made with Noah and all mankind and “every living creature” we take great comfort. God commits himself to never destroying the earth with a flood again.
However, the reality is not lost on me that our God did in fact destroy all the earth except for those in the ark with Noah at that time. Our God is like that. He has his own sense of justice and will take action when he deems fit. He has promised to never destroy the world in a flood again but just listen to what Peter has to say in 2 Peter 3:5-13,
“They [scoffers in the last days] deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men… But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare… Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.”
I thank God for his promise not to destroy the earth by water again… but woe to the man who assumes our God will not exact his vengeance again against the godlessness and wickedness of men!
