The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in Genesis 8:20-21,
“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: ‘Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.’”
Following the flood and disembarking the ark Noah makes this sacrifice. The Lord’s response is one we read where he says in his own heart, “Never again…”
How can we possibly know what God says “in his heart”? Only God can tell someone what he says to himself in his own heart. Here we see the transcendent nature of Scripture that sets itself apart from any other literature known to man: it is inspired by God! In 2 Peter 1:20-21 we read, “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
No question in my mind that Moses was the author of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible, including Genesis) and wrote it all - other than a few editorial comments we read (such as Deuteronomy 34, etc.) Where some attempt to compromise the authority, veracity, and truthfulness of Genesis and the other four books of Moses by claiming other writers and editors who engaged in a “scissors and paste extravaganza” produced some literature to bring about a revival in the post-exile period of Israel, I follow my Lord. Jesus Christ thought Moses wrote it and said so. As the Son of God he should know. See Matthew 8:4, Mark 7:10, 10:1-12, Luke 20:37, etc. I call myself a Christian because I follow Jesus Christ. Others can claim what they want. As Jesus said in John 5:46, “If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
What a great question for our generation today!
