The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Genesis 12:1-4a,
"The Lord had said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.' So Abram left, as the Lord had told him…"
Here in this call the Lord gives Abram, we find a sevenfold set of promises. In a few verses later, 12:7, the Lord promised land to Abram's offspring. Abram is a man of faith as we are told in Genesis 15:6, "Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness."
In Romans 9:8 we read, "In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring." So who are the children of the promise? This is an important question as we see these promises to Abram were not for just him alone but for his offspring, his children.
In Romans 4:11b-12 we read, "So then, he [Abraham] is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised."
All of us who emulate the faith Abraham displayed in the Lord are considered his offspring, his children. As such we receive the promises the Lord gave Abram and his offspring!
All of these promises are ours in Jesus Christ!
