The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, and majestic in his radiant splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Psalm 142:1-3a,

"I cry aloud to the Lord;
I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.
I pour out my complaint before him;
before him I tell my trouble.
When my spirit grows faint within me,
it is you who know my way."
David knew the Lord well. As God's hand picked king for his people, the Lord made himself known to David in a way many of us never will know him this side of the resurrection. Far from a perfect man, David had his faults as is well documented in the Scriptures. Nevertheless, David was a man of faith, a man of great faith, a man who knew God well.
As such, I find I can learn much from David about the Lord I have come to love so much. This psalm is rich in insights David provides us about the Lord.
The first is that the Lord listens to us. He has made himself available to us through prayer. David cried aloud to the Lord, he lifted his voice to the Lord of mercy and made his requests. As I ponder that for just a moment, something I just take for granted from day to day is something that is in truth fascinating and wonderful! The Creator of the cosmos, of all there is, the maker of every human being, will listen to me, to my concerns, to the yearnings of my heart! He does so for each one of us! That David made requests of the Lord tells me of David's realization that the Lord will at times intervene in the affairs of this life on our behalf!
The fact that David poured out his complaint before the Lord tells me of David's utmost confidence that the Lord cares about us! What we experience, what we care about, what our hearts yearn for is of concern to God. He cares about what takes place in our lives as he is someone to take those things to. David certainly did!
David goes on to say that the Lord knew him! "It is you who know my way." The Lord knows us: knows us well! I am confident the Lord knows much more about each one of us than we know ourselves. He knows what makes us tick. He knows what dangers we face. He knows our shortcomings and he knows all about the sins in our lives. He knows what brings fulfillment and true happiness to our lives and he knows about our affections and the things we care deeply about. What I find astonishing about this is that in the midst of knowing us inside-out, he loves us so much that he sent his Son to die a horrible death to pay for our sins - that we might live with him for all eternity!
As I continue to learn of the Lord, at times I find it is not so much that I get new information, but that what I may already be aware of finds a much deeper appreciation in my heart, illuminating my mind and heart in new ways as he reveals himself to me.
