The Lord is awe-inspiring, fearsome, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him today and what came to my heart and mind in Luke 10:38-42,
"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, 'Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!' 'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"
Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to what he said. Her sister, Martha, was concerned and distracted by all those "preparations that had to be made." Martha had opened their home to the Lord and his disciples and the picture we see here is that while Martha was focused on the many practical concerns of hosting the Lord and his disciples, Mary was focused on one thing - listening to the Lord, sitting at his feet and listening to what he had to say.

Where Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help with the preparations, the Lord told her that Mary had chosen what was best - to sit at his feet and listen to what he had to say. Left unsaid, it could be assumed the thought was that the preparations could take care of themselves - something far more important was going on.
This certainly brings to mind the 168 hours each week we are given here in this life. There are many concerns, many things that distract us, many responsibilities that call for our attention. While not suggesting that many of these things are unimportant, Jesus expresses here that there is a priority of importance. That priority is to sit at his feet and listen to what he has to say. We do that by picking up our Bibles and listening to him speak.
At the end of any week, we should be able to look back at those 168 hours and be able to say we had "chosen what is better" for some of them. What did your week and my week look like last week?
