Worship for Today

The Lord is awe-inspiring, fascinating, intriguing, majestic, and full of splendor: breathtaking! Here is what I saw of him in 1 John 2:14b,

I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

The above is the NIV translation. To clarify the gender confusion the TNIV translates this verse and the parallel verse with it, verse 13b as young people as opposed to young men. Many commentators for years have recognized the term young men as better translated this way, not to satisfy current cultural sensitivities but to reflect better what John actually wrote relative to the way we speak. Think in terms of mankind meaning people as opposed to men. I point this out only to encourage the fairer half that they share together with us males in something wonderful the Lord has worked in all of us! John tells us the word of God lives in us!

In announcing the New Covenant God makes we read in Jeremiah 31:33, This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. As we wait for the coming of our participation in the resurrection we look forward to the fulfillment of all that has been promised to us in this new covenant. But as we wait we celebrate what God has already provided for us under the terms of this covenant. As John points out in our verse here, the word of God lives in you!

The writer of Hebrews tells us the word of God is living and active. Hebrews 4:12. No mere academic commodity of information here, Gods word is vibrant, pulsating with life. It has the ability to shape our thinking, our perspectives and provide all we need to be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17. In 2 Peter 1:3-4 we read, His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Beyond this we are told that Jesus Christ himself is the Word of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1, 14.

All of this lives within us as children of God. It makes us strong, helping us overcome the evil one. It changes us from within, making a new creation of us, 2 Corinthians 5:17. What a cause for worship!

Anything of the Lord capture your heart from Scripture today? Share your theme of worship with us from your Bible reading today. We’d love to hear from you!
